STONEHOUSE ROAD

Renovating 100 year old homes is as much about making improvements to the infrastructure as it is about making modifications to accommodate lifestyle changes.  Previously a purely functional room, kitchens have morphed into command centers for the family.  And so as families spend more time here, that space must be optimally laid out for maximum functionality and optimal flow.  It should also be a cheerful space to start and end each day.

Through the incorporation of a modest addition, we were able to transform a previously cramped kitchen into an inviting space at the heart of this family's home.  The consideration of lighting - both daylight and electric; the spatial relationship between appliances, access to workspace; adjacency of dinnerware storage to dishwasher and kitchen sink to garbage bin; ample space for multiple cooks; and the separation of the cook(s) from guests are just a few of the considerations we put into a kitchen layout - all before layering in the added expertise of the kitchen cabinetry team.

This project in particular, benefited from a client with a discerning eye for detail and an ability to curate a handsome palette of materials.

During a dinner party, the second sink in the butler's pantry allows a cocktail to be made without encumbering a potentially busy kitchen.

A covered porch provides outdoor living and dining space adjacent to the kitchen.  The landscape design utilizes the natural topography to create separate activity zones.  And carefully considered plantings provide natural cover and forage for songbirds that grace the yard.
